The use of films as a pedagogical tool for health education
INTRODUCTION: Dynamic activities have been proved to be potentially important teaching tools, as they aid during the learning process. Edited cinematographic productions with pre-determined purposes of promotion and health education are proved to be very effective since it presents a dynamic way of learning about topics related to different areas, also, they can promote discussions about the film shown. The tool in question can be used remotely during a pandemic or even in the post-pandemic period. AIM: To report the action in health education, "Cine Saúde com Labmorfo" offered at a Federal University. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The project was developed in two stages: (I) Exhibition of the edited film; (II) Socialization and oral discussion of the film regarding issues of different aspects related to health and illness. The work was carried out by the Morphofunctional Laboratory Extension Project, with financial support from the Sustainability and Social Integration Division of the Federal University of Sul da Bahia (Pró-Reitoria de Sustentabilidade e Integração Social from Universidade Federal do Sul da Bahia). The project was performed by a team of 14 individuals divided into two groups to carry out the activities in two sessions. For the edition of the videos, the members of the extension project used Microsoft's video editing software, the Windows Movie Maker. RESULTS: The action took place on August 6, 2019, at the Paulo Freire campus, with a total of 42 participants. In the afternoon session, the film “To The Bone” was shown, edited for 34 minutes. In the evening session, the film “Lorenzo’s Oil” was shown, with an edited duration of 33 minutes. After each session, a discussion of the film was conducted by a guest professor. In both sessions, participants won a personalized cup and participated in raffles. CONCLUSION: The participants of the project learned about health-related topics through film exhibitions and discussions, thus encouraging changes in lifestyle and improving their quality of life. Besides, the use of digital technologies for health during the pandemic had a relatively large adhesion, showing a versatile and insightful teaching tool during and possibly post the pandemic of Covid-19. Thus, the adequacy and expansion of teaching methodologies tend to improve more and more to meet social needs and to explore new teaching trends.
